Larry and Doreen Venturi take pride in their Italian heritage which is integral to their family, lifestyle and grape growing methods. Longtime members of the Ukiah Sons of Italy, Doreen and Larry grew up in an Italian American household working on the family ranches. Larry’s family came from the Tuscany region of Italy and settled in the Calpella-Redwood Valley area in the mid-1917 and has been an integral part of the Italian agricultural community. As Larry says, Westside Capella is called “Little Italy”. Larry has a passion for the full farming lifestyle that satisfies his passion not only for farming, but also hunting and fishing at his family’s ranch where Larry and Doreen live next to, in Calpella.
The hillside vineyard that he purchased 45 years ago includes Carignane, Charbono, Petite Sirah and Zinfandel. On the eastside of US 101 he grows Sauvignon Blanc, Grenache Noir, Sangiovese and Merlot. Larry has carried on the family tradition from his grandparents that grew organically and is Certified Organic. Portalupi’ s Charbono comes from 90-year-old vines that provide a unique complexity to the wine and has proven to be a Gold Medal winning wine. The Petite Sirah is bench terraced, dry framed, also a Gold Medal winner.
